Tips on Clothing Style and accessories:

Memorable portraits take careful planning, and the clothing you choose is very important in the portraits success.

Types of Clothing:

One good rule is simple garments always photograph best.

Make sure it fits! Clothing that is too tight make the subject look uncomfortable and confined. Baggy clothing doesn’t photograph well and will sometimes add unwanted pounds.

Choose the right neckline! Turtlenecks or V-necks are very flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style. Avoid wide or particularly deep V-neck garments, as well and bulky cowl neck sweaters that completely hide the neck.

Long sleeves are essential for teens and adults, as bare arms and shoulders call attention to them and overpower the face. Bare arms also add weight and appear larger than they really are. Garments with shoulder pads will also make you appear larger.

Colors:

Dark colors and long sleeves are slimming and more flattering. Avoid large patterns and stripes, especially horizontal striped that tend to add weight.

In a family group, proper clothing is critical. When selecting clothing for a family portrait choose clothing that is all relatively the same color and has the same tonal range. One members clothing should not be a different color, brighter or darker than the rest of the families clothing.

Hair:

Men should have their hair cut about one week before the portrait session. Men should also be clean-shaven, or their beard and/or moustache trimmed. Women should be photographed whenever they are the happiest with their hair in relation to the time it is styled. Avoid brand new hairstyles and cuts.
